Carnaval in Barranquilla is over-saturated in the most beautiful way, as it’s made up of hot sunshine, a cloudless blue dome above, loud costumes, pounding music, and a fascinating array of characters stemming from folkloric stories, traditional dances, popular culture, and the complex history of the region.
I was only there for one day this year–February 26th, the Sunday after the Battle of the Flowers and the crowning of the Carnaval Queens–which hosts dance schools of all ages as they make their way down Vía 40. It’s more laid-back, with the partiers resting from Saturday’s events and preparing for the end of Carnaval on Tuesday.
This kaleidoscopic and melodic day was all about big laughs, and impossibly hot and stuffy costumes, but there were a few characters that stood out among the crowds; but when looking back through my photos (all shot with my Motorola Moto G4), they faded into their explosive backgrounds. So I decided to try selective colouring for the first time to make the faces that stuck out to me that day pop in their hectic surroundings.
El carnaval de Barranquilla es sobresaturado en la manera más hermosa posible, ya que está hecho de un sol picante, un domo azul sin una sola nube, disfraces escandalosos, música a todo taco, y una fascinante selección de personajes que vienen de las historias folklóricas, los bailes tradicionales, la cultura popular, y la compleja historia de la región.
Sólo estuve un día este año–el 26 de febrero, el domingo después de la Batalla de las Flores y los coronamientos de las Reinas del Carnaval. Escuelas de danza de todas las edades desfilaron por la Vía 40 y el día fue relativamente tranquilo, ya que los fiesteros estaban descansando de los eventos del sábado y preparándose para el fin del carnaval el martes.
Este día de kaleidoscópios y melodías estuvo lleno de carcajadas, y de disfraces imposiblemente calurosos y peloudos, pero hubo algunos personajes que sobresalieron entre la gente; cuando volví a mirar mis fotos (todas tomadas con mi celular Motorola Moto G4), ví que se desaparecían en sus fondos explosivos. Entonces decidí intentar por primera vez la técnica de coloración selectiva, para que los rostros que ese día se destacaron, también se hagan notar aún con fondos tan frenéticos.
