Maribor, Slovenia

In autumn of 2023, my family and I drove south-west from Slovakia and through Austria to arrive in Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city, which greeted us with a bright rainbow.

Located in the country’s north-eastern Lower Styria region, the city is best known for its wine, medieval architecture, and the beautiful landscapes that stretch along the Drava River.

I loved walking around Maribor’s parks and streets, which are dotted with colourful buildings and Soviet-era sculptures. But one of my favourite experiences was visiting the Vinag 1847 wine cellar, which still houses very old and very big wine barrels in its wonderfully creepy underground tunnels.

From Maribor, we travelled to Ljubljana, Slovenia’s captivating capital city.
