Photographs taken between 2013 and 2016 of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, from Santa Marta and its beaches in the north to the islands near Cartagena and popular tourist spot, Tolu further south. Colombia’s Caribbean is a culturally and geographically diverse region located in the country’s north Atlantic coast. Covering over 1,000 KM from the deserts of the Guajira department on the north-east, bordering Venezuela, to the thick Darien jungle of Choco in the south-west, bordering Panama, the Caribbean coast is a tropical paradise with many colours and faces.

El Caribe colombiano es una región cultural y geográficamente diversa ubicada en la costa Atlántica norte del país. Recorriendo más de 1,000 KM desde los desiertos de La Guajira en el nor-oriente cerca la frontera con Venezuela, hasta la espesa selva del Darién en el Chocó en el sur-occidente cerca la frontera con Panamá, la costa Caribe es un paraíso tropical que viste de muchos colores y tiene muchas caras.

Waves of migrants have settled on Colombia’s Caribbean coast throughout history: it started with the Spanish conquistadores and the African slaves brought to the Americas against their will; then came the Jews, fleeing Europe, and other migrants from countries like France, Syria, Lebanon, and more, who arrived on Colombia’s shores to start a new life. As many were escaping persecution, they changed their names when they arrived, thus erasing the traces of their ethnic legacy.

Olas de imigrantes se han instalado en la costa Caribe de Colombia a través de la historia: primero llegaron los conquistadores españoles y los esclavos africanos a quienes trajeron en contra de su voluntad; después vinieron judíos escapando Europa y otros migrantes de países como Francia, Siria, Líbano y más, quienes llegaron al litoral colombiano a empezar una nueva vida. Como muchos estaban escapando la persecución, cambiaron sus nombres al llegar, borrando los trazos de su legado étnico.

Today, Colombia’s Caribbean has its own diverse culture and some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Between Guajira and Chocó there are countless bays and islands, mountains and swamps. These photographs document only a fraction of the region’s natural bounty.
