Guatapé, Antioquia

The last time I visited Guatapé was in July 2015, but these photographs somehow got lost only to be found nearly a year and a half later. I’ve been visiting this beautiful place since I was a child and still can’t get enough of the view!

La última vez que fui a Guatapé fue en julio de 2015 y perdí las fotos de alguna manera, encontrándolas casi un año y medio después. He estado visitando este lugar desde chiquita y todavía no me canso de la vista!

Piedra del Peñol

Guatapé is a small town in Antioquia just 80 km east of Medellín; it’s known for the 220 metre tall monolith that stands next to one of Colombia’s largest dams. But there’s more to the region than climbing the rock and the stunning views from the top of it that many visitors might not know about.

Guatapé es un pequeño municipio en el departamento de Antioquia ubicado a unos 80 km al oriente de Medellín. Es conocido principalmente por el imponente monolito de 220 metros y una de las represas más grandes de Colombia. Pero hay detalles de la historia de la región que muchos visitantes puedan no conocer.

Represa del Peñol

In the 1970s, Guatapé and the neighbouring town of Peñol were partially flooded to build the dam, forcing many of its inhabitants to relocate; there was also a long dispute over the ownership of the monolith, which left it branded with a huge ‘GI’ painted in white on its side–the beginnings of ‘GUATAPE’.

En los 1970s, Guatapé y su pueblo vecino de El Peñol fueron parcialmente inundados para construir el embalse, obligando a muchos de sus habitantes a dejar sus hogares; también hubo una larga disputa sobre la propiedad de la piedra, dejándola marcada con un enorme ‘GI’ en blanco en su costado, los comienzos de ‘GUATAPE’.

Guatapé

The towns were rebuilt and are seeing more tourism than ever before, especially Guatapé because, by a previous mayor’s own decree, every house must have traditional colourful tiles, making the town a picturesque location to enjoy water sports and other cultural activities.

Los pueblos fueron reconstruidos y están viendo más turismo que antes, especialmente Guatapé ya que, por decreto de un ex-alcalde, todas las casas deben tener zócalos coloridos, convirtiendo el pueblo en una locación encantadora para disfrutar los deportes de agua y otras actividades culturales.
