Nuquí & Termales

Photos of my 2015 visit to the municipality of Nuqui on Colombia’s Pacific coast. Nuqui and its surrounding townships are each inhabited by fewer than 8,000 people, mostly Afro-descendents and indigenous communities.

Nuquí

Nuqui and its surrounding areas have been historically neglected by the colombian government, but eco-tourism has brought visitors––and money––to the region, opening it up for outsiders to explore and enjoy.

Termales

Termales is a very small municipality located south of Nuqui that gets its name from the natural thermal pools that bubble near a crystal-clear river which cuts a path through the lush jungle. Whale-watching and surfing are also popular activities in the region.

Although surf is a relatively new sport in Colombia, surfers are training on the Pacific coast, like Edwin Piyi Diaz from Termales–where the Choco Surf Club was founded in 2013–who has participated in several national and international competitions. Here are some photographs of Piyi and my first attempt to capture this sport.
