La Mesenia es una reserva natural dedicada a la conservación, investigación y observación de las aves nativas del suroeste antioqueño. Está ubicada principalmente en el municipio de Jardín en Antioquia, pero también abarca territorio en los municipios de Andes, Antioquia; Río Sucio en Caldas; Mistrató en Risaralda; y una parte del departamento del Chocó.
Fue fundada por la Fundación de Conservación Colibrí y trabaja también con Save the Species y La Union Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (International Union for Conservation of Nature o IUCN).
Para llegar a La Mesenia, se debe salir de Jardín hasta Macanas, y de allí caminar aproximadamente una hora y media. Hay que cruzar el río varias veces por pequeños puentes de madera, y cuando llueve, se vuelve más difícil el camino. Y hace mucho frío. Aunque los días despejados son más calurosos y el sol es muy fuerte. Pero vale la pena el esfuerzo de llegar, es un lugar realmente espectacular. Es posible avistar muchas aves endémicas y representativas de la región, haciéndola un lugar ideal para biólogos, ornitólogos y pajareros.

La Mesenia is a natural reserve dedicated to the conservation, research and observation of native bird species in Antioquia’s southwest. It’s located mainly in the municipality of Jardín, in the department of Antioquia, but also has land in the municipality of Andes, also in Antioquia; Río Sucio in Caldas; Mistrató in Risaralda; and a part in the department of Chocó.
It was founded by the Hummingbird Conservancy Foundation, and they also work with Save the Species and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
To arrive at La Mesenia, it’s necessary to leave from Jardín and travel to Macanas, from where you must walk approximately one hour and a half. You have to cross the river several times over narrow wooden bridges, and when it rains, the road becomes even more difficult. And it’s very cold, although on clear days the temperature is warmer and the sun is very strong. It’s possible to see many endemic and iconic birds of the region, making it an ideal location for biologists, ornithologists and birdwatchers.
